Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about GratifID digital tipping

Getting Started

What is GratifID?

GratifID is a worker-owned digital tipping platform that helps service workers stop losing tips in the cashless economy. Using NFC technology (the same tech as Apple Pay), customers can tap their phone on your GratifID tag and tip instantly via Apple Pay or Google Pay — no app downloads, no QR codes, no friction.

Your GratifID is your universal tipping identity that moves with you across jobs, cities, and careers. You own it, you control it, and you keep your tips (minus standard processing fees).

How does it work?

It's simple — 3 steps, under 10 seconds:

  1. Tap: Customer taps their phone on your NFC tag (wristband, keychain, button, or card)
  2. Tip: Payment screen opens instantly — they choose an amount and pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay
  3. Done: Funds appear immediately in your GratifID app, ready to transfer to your bank

No app download required for customers. No scanning QR codes. Just tap and tip.

What devices are compatible?

GratifID works with all modern smartphones:

  • iPhone: iPhone 7 and newer (iOS 13+)
  • Android: Most Android phones from 2017+ with NFC enabled
  • Apple Pay & Google Pay: Required for secure payment processing

That's over 95% of smartphones in use today. If a customer can pay with their phone at a store, they can tip with GratifID.

Ownership & Cost

Who owns the GratifID tag?

You own it. Period.

Your GratifID tag and account belong to you — not your employer, not the venue, not us. It's your personal tipping identity that stays with you for life.

This is fundamentally different from traditional tip jars or venue-owned tipping systems. With GratifID:

  • ✅ You control your profile and tip history
  • ✅ You take it with you when you change jobs
  • ✅ You decide when and how to withdraw your funds
  • ✅ You keep your tips after standard processing fees (5.9% + $0.30 per transaction)
Are the tags free?

Yes! Your first GratifID tag is completely free when you sign up during our early access period.

What you get:

  • ✅ One free NFC tag (your choice: wristband, keychain, button, or card)
  • ✅ Free GratifID app for iOS and Android
  • ✅ Free instant bank transfers
  • ✅ No monthly fees or hidden charges

Additional tags: If you want extra tags or replacement tags, they're available for a small one-time fee (~$5-10 each). But one tag is all you need to start earning more tips!

What are the fees?

Transparent pricing — no hidden fees or surprises:

  • Total transaction fee: 5.9% + $0.30 per tip (includes Stripe payment processing + GratifID platform)
  • What you get for the fee:
    • ✅ Your own portable tipping identity (not tied to any employer)
    • ✅ Free NFC tag (wristband, keychain, button, or card)
    • ✅ Instant payment processing (under 10 seconds)
    • ✅ Bank-level security and fraud protection
    • ✅ No app required for customers
    • ✅ Free email support during business hours
  • Bank transfers: Free next-business-day transfers (instant transfers available with small Stripe fee)
  • Monthly fees: None
  • Setup fees: None
  • Cancellation fees: None
  • Minimum tip amount: None — accept tips of any size

Real example: Customer tips you $20 → You receive $18.62 after fees. Customer tips you $10 → You receive $9.11.

Compare to alternatives:

  • 💰 Cash tips: 0% but customers increasingly don't carry cash (83% have $5 or less)
  • 💰 Venmo/PayPal: 2.9-3.5% but slow (30-60 sec), awkward during service, requires sharing personal info, not designed for tipping
  • 💰 QR code tipping: Similar fees but slower (30-60 seconds vs 10 seconds), requires app downloads, no portable identity
  • 💰 Lost tips: Workers lose $400-800/month because customers can't tip easily

Why is GratifID's fee higher than basic payment processors? Unlike Venmo or PayPal (which just move money), GratifID's 5.9% includes:

  • NFC hardware infrastructure — physical tags, not just software
  • Portable identity system — your tipping profile follows you across jobs forever
  • Worker-owned platform — you control your account, not your employer
  • Purpose-built for tipping — 10-second experience vs 30-60 seconds with generic apps
  • Tax documentation & compliance — automatic IRS reporting, year-end summaries
  • Free physical tag — no upfront hardware cost to you

The bottom line: With GratifID, you'll capture 30-40% more tips from customers who don't carry cash. Even after the 5.9% fee, you take home significantly more than relying on cash alone or using generic payment apps. The fee pays for itself many times over by eliminating lost tips and providing infrastructure that's actually designed for service workers.

Does my GratifID tag move with me if I change jobs?

Absolutely! That's the whole point.

Your GratifID is fully portable — it's your universal tipping identity that follows you throughout your entire career:

  • Change restaurants? Take it with you
  • Move to a new city? Same GratifID works everywhere
  • Switch careers? Use it in any service role (bartender, server, valet, bellhop, etc.)
  • Work multiple jobs? One GratifID works across all of them

Your tip history, ratings, and profile stay with you. You never have to start over or lose your digital tipping identity when life changes.

Security & Privacy

How secure is GratifID?

Bank-level security powered by industry-leading technology:

  • 🔒 Stripe payment processing: Same infrastructure used by Amazon, Google, and millions of businesses worldwide
  • 🔒 PCI-DSS Level 1 certified: The highest security standard for payment processing
  • 🔒 End-to-end encryption: All payment data is encrypted in transit and at rest
  • 🔒 No card data stored: We never see or store customer payment information
  • 🔒 Tokenized payments: Apple Pay and Google Pay use secure tokens, not actual card numbers
  • 🔒 Fraud protection: Advanced fraud detection and prevention systems

For customers: Tipping with GratifID is as secure as buying coffee with Apple Pay or Google Pay. Their payment info never leaves their device.

For workers: Your funds are held in FDIC-insured accounts and can be transferred to your bank instantly.

What if someone steals my tag?

Don't worry — you're fully protected:

  • 🛡️ Instant deactivation: Open the GratifID app and disable your tag immediately. Tips will no longer go through.
  • 🛡️ No access to funds: The tag alone can't withdraw money. Only you can transfer funds from the app to your bank.
  • 🛡️ Free replacement: We'll send you a replacement tag at no charge (one-time protection)
  • 🛡️ Transfer your identity: Your tip history, ratings, and profile stay with you — just activate the new tag

Think of it like a lost credit card: The thief can't access your bank account, and you can cancel it instantly. But unlike a credit card, there's no sensitive info on the tag — it's just a secure pointer to your account.

Is my personal information safe?

Your privacy is our top priority:

  • Minimal data collection: We only collect what's necessary for payments and account management
  • No selling of data: We will never sell your personal information to third parties
  • Profile control: You decide what information is public (first name, photo, venue — all optional)
  • Anonymous tipping: Customers can tip without seeing your full name or contact info
  • GDPR & CCPA compliant: Full compliance with privacy regulations

Read our full Privacy Policy for complete details.

What are the tax implications?

Quick overview — digital tips are reported income, just like cash tips:

  • 📊 IRS reporting: Tips over $600/year are reported via Form 1099-K (same as Venmo, PayPal, etc.)
  • 📊 Documentation provided: GratifID supplies all necessary documents for IRS reporting
  • 📊 Automatic tracking: GratifID app tracks all your tips for easy tax reporting
  • 📊 Export reports: Download year-end summaries for your tax preparer
  • 📊 "No Tax on Tips" deduction: Under the 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill, you can deduct up to $25,000 of tip income — see the question below for full details and real savings examples
  • 📊 Your responsibility: You're responsible for reporting all tip income (digital and cash) to the IRS

💡 Want to know about tax savings? See the next question: "Do I still pay tax on my tips under the new 'No Tax on Tips' law?" for detailed information about the $25,000 deduction and how much you can save.

For venues: GratifID is 100% tax-neutral — venues never touch tip funds, so there's no payroll tax liability or reporting burden. Tips go directly from customer to worker.

Do I still pay tax on my tips under the new "No Tax on Tips" law?

Great news! The "No Tax on Tips" provision in the One Big Beautiful Bill (2025+) provides significant tax relief for service workers.

Here's how it works:

  • 💰 Up to $25,000 deduction: You can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tip income on your federal tax return
  • 💰 Qualifying occupations: Applies to hospitality, food service, bartending, valet, bellhop, and other tipped service professions
  • 💰 Income phase-out: The deduction phases out for individuals earning above $150,000 total income
  • 💰 Still reported as income: Tips are still received income and reported to the IRS — the deduction is claimed on your tax return, not exempt at source
  • 💰 You still receive 1099-K forms: GratifID reports tips over $600/year as required by law, but you can deduct them when filing taxes

How GratifID makes claiming this deduction easy:

  • Complete digital record: Every tip is automatically tracked in the app — no guessing or manual logs
  • Year-end tax summaries: Export your complete tip history with one click for your tax preparer
  • Categorized by date: Break down tips by month, quarter, or year for easy reporting
  • IRS-ready documentation: All the forms and records you need to claim the maximum deduction
  • Cash tips too: You can add manual entries for cash tips to track everything in one place

Example calculation:

Let's say you earn $30,000 in tips through GratifID in 2026:
Tip income: $30,000
Maximum deduction: $25,000
Taxable tip income: $5,000
Estimated tax savings: ~$5,500 (at 22% tax bracket)

Important notes:

  • ⚠️ You're still responsible for reporting all tip income to the IRS
  • ⚠️ The deduction is claimed when you file your tax return (Form 1040)
  • ⚠️ State taxes: This is a federal deduction — state tax rules vary. Good news: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming have no state income tax, so workers in these states get the full benefit!
  • ⚠️ Consult a tax professional for personalized advice on claiming this deduction

Bottom line: The "No Tax on Tips" law is a huge win for service workers, and GratifID's automatic tracking makes it easy to claim the maximum deduction you're entitled to. Unlike cash tips (which are hard to prove), digital tips give you an ironclad paper trail for tax time.

Do I pay taxes on my tips?

Yes — all tips are taxable income, whether cash, credit card, or digital.

💰 But here's the great news! Under the 2025 "No Tax on Tips" law, you can deduct up to $25,000 of tip income on your federal tax return — potentially saving $5,500-$9,250 annually in taxes.

👉 See the detailed answer above: "Do I still pay tax on my tips under the new 'No Tax on Tips' law?" — includes real examples, how GratifID makes claiming this deduction easy, and state-by-state info.

The bottom line:

  • ✅ Yes, you report all tip income to the IRS
  • ✅ But you can deduct up to $25,000 under the new law
  • ✅ GratifID automatically tracks every tip — making tax filing and deduction claims simple
  • ✅ Unlike cash tips (which you have to manually log), digital tips give you an automatic, IRS-ready paper trail

Pro tip: Set aside 10-15% of your tip income for taxes throughout the year (accounting for the $25k deduction) to avoid surprises at tax time. Consult a tax professional for personalized advice.

Can my employer see how much I earn in tips?

No. Your tip earnings are private.

Because you own your GratifID account (not your employer), your tip income is confidential. Your employer cannot:

  • ❌ See how much you earn in tips
  • ❌ Access your GratifID account
  • ❌ Control or withhold your tips
  • ❌ Take a percentage of your digital tips

However: You are legally required to report your tip income to your employer for tax purposes (just like cash tips). But the actual transaction details and amounts remain private to you.

For Venues & Employers

Does GratifID create any liability for my venue?

No. GratifID is 100% tax-neutral with zero liability for venues.

Here's why venues love GratifID:

  • No payroll integration required: Tips go directly from customer to worker — venue never touches the funds
  • No tax reporting: Since you don't process the tips, there's no 1099 reporting or payroll tax liability
  • No IT changes: No software to install, no POS integration needed
  • No accounts to manage: Workers own their accounts — you have zero administrative burden
  • No financial risk: We handle all payment processing, fraud protection, and chargebacks

The benefit: Happier staff who earn 30%+ more in tips, with zero operational overhead for you.

How do I get GratifID for my team?

It's incredibly easy:

  1. Contact us: Request a pilot program or email us at partners@gratifid.com
  2. We handle onboarding: We'll provide free tags for your team and help them set up accounts
  3. Deploy in days: No IT work, no POS integration — just distribute tags and go live

Pilot programs include:

  • ✅ Free tags for your entire team
  • ✅ On-site training and support
  • ✅ Custom branded materials (optional)
  • ✅ Performance analytics and insights

Typical deployment time: 2-5 business days from approval to go-live.

Can I track my team's performance?

Yes — with your team's consent.

GratifID offers optional venue analytics that provide aggregated, anonymized insights:

  • 📊 Total tip volume across your venue
  • 📊 Average tip amounts and customer satisfaction trends
  • 📊 Peak tipping times and busiest shifts
  • 📊 Customer engagement metrics

Privacy protection: Individual worker earnings remain private unless workers opt in to share their data with management. You'll see team-wide trends, not individual incomes.

The goal: Help you understand guest satisfaction and optimize operations without invading worker privacy.

Technical & Troubleshooting

What if a customer's phone doesn't work with NFC?

Rare, but we have backup options:

  • 🔗 QR code fallback: Every GratifID tag has a QR code on the back — they can scan it instead
  • 🔗 Manual link: Share your personal GratifID link (like: gratifid.me/yourname)
  • 🔗 NFC is nearly universal: 95%+ of smartphones from 2017+ have NFC built-in

In practice, NFC issues are extremely rare. Most "NFC not working" problems are actually just customers not holding their phone close enough (needs to be within 1-2 inches).

Do I need WiFi or cell service?

The customer needs internet, but you don't:

  • Your tag works offline: NFC tags don't need power or internet — they work anywhere
  • 📱 Customer needs connection: The customer's phone needs WiFi or cell service to complete the payment
  • 📱 Your app needs connection: You'll need internet to check your balance and transfer funds (but tips still process without you online)

This is one reason GratifID is better than tablet-based tipping systems — your tag works even in areas with poor reception (basements, remote locations, etc.). The customer's phone handles the connection.

What if my tag stops working?

NFC tags are extremely durable, but if yours fails:

  • 🔄 Free replacement: Contact support and we'll send a new tag at no charge
  • 🔄 Instant transfer: Activate your new tag in the app — your account, tips, and history transfer automatically
  • 🔄 No downtime: Use your QR code or personal link while waiting for the replacement

Tag lifespan: NFC tags are waterproof, shock-resistant, and rated for 5+ years of daily use. Wristbands and keychains are especially durable.

Can I have multiple tags?

Yes! All linked to the same account:

  • ✅ Use a wristband for bartending and a card for valet shifts
  • ✅ Keep a backup tag in your locker
  • ✅ Give a tag to a family member who also works in service

All tags link to your single GratifID account, so tips from any tag appear in the same place. You can activate/deactivate individual tags anytime in the app.

Additional tags: ~$5-10 each (one-time cost). First tag is always free.
